These figures won’t impact your game, and they (probably) won’t change your opinions on America’s fastest-growing sport.

Nonetheless, they’re interesting glimpses at pickleball’s core. They may seem like dry facts, but these pickleball statistics give us a chance to see the sport for what it is. We get to marvel at its rapid growth and substantial appeal. With these figures, we can look at pickleball courts in a new light and better understand how we can nurture pickleball’s continued growth.

The Basic Facts

Let’s start with the basics.

In 2023 alone, the number of pickleball players increased by 52%, ballooning from 8.95 million to 13.58 million. In other words, pickleball gained 4.63 million players in a single year! Those numbers corroborate reports from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), which ranks pickleball as the fastest-growing sport in America.

Pickleball locations are multiplying to meet those demands. As of January 1, 2024, USA Pickleball’s Places2Play map lists 50,003 ready-to-use pickleball courts worldwide. Many of those locations are within public parks and recreational centers, so everyone has a chance to play pickleball!

Who Plays Pickleball?

Pop culture has cast the “typical” pickleball player as an energetic retiree dinking it out on a pickleball court in Southern Florida. Now, some of that is based on facts. In the early days, most of the people playing pickleball were silver-haired snowbirds. However, that image is changing.

While the largest age bracket skews high, a popularity boom among younger players is closing the generation gap. SFIA figures the average age of pickleball players has dropped to 35. In fact, a Harvard-backed study had an overall age range of 18–84, showcasing pickleball’s massive appeal. Under-24 players are flocking to the sport, contributing to 21% of the demographic growth in 2021.

Some of this growth comes from the rising popularity of racquet sports, which have risen in popularity by 20% since 2019. More excitingly, pickleball’s share of that growth is massive!

Where Are People Playing Pickleball?

Pickleball statistics still place America at the top of global pickleball participation rankings.

Nonetheless, the sport’s appeal is spreading. 2,100 volunteer USA Pickleball ambassadors push to make pickleball global, and those efforts are working. As of 2024, the International Pickleball Federation oversees 77 fully recognized national divisions. Several of these nations are also hosts of international pickleball tournaments, including:

• England (English Open)
• Italy (Italian Open)
• Mexico (Americas Championships)
• South Korea (Asia Opens)

Thanks to its geographic proximity, Central America has seen a massive boom in pickleball interest. In Mexico, you’ll even find picturesque resorts dedicated to training rising pickleball stars. These luxury-grade getaways include access to private pickleball courts and Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) certified trainers.

However, there are two more pickleball hotspots! Both Africa and Asia are teeming with eager pickleball players. Nations across both continents are building pickleball courts to meet demands, but we don’t have in-depth statistics yet. Nonetheless, we have stories of amazing pickleball players bringing America’s fastest-growing sport halfway across the world.

Pickleball Statistics in America

Closer to its birthplace, pickleball claims its third consecutive year of unprecedented growth.

In 2023, America hosted 47 officially sanctioned pickleball tournaments across its “major” pickleball organizations (namely, the IPF, PPA, USAPA, and WPF). The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) alone contributed $43,550 in grants in 2023. As of 2024, 78,766 Americans played pickleball and loved it enough to become registered members of the USAPA.

Despite its continued growth, pickleball continues to settle in three primary regions: the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, and South Atlantic region. In fact, Seattle currently holds the record for having the most pickleball courts, averaging 4 courts per 20,000 residents.

Of course, you can’t have a growing sport without a booming market. Pickleball equipment sales are the sports world’s latest craze!

On the surface, contractors are lapping up the sport’s growing popularity. New courts mean more business, and court construction isn’t cheap! However, you must also account for the manufacturers and equipment salespeople.

More Interest, More Places to Play Pickleball

Over 400 new pickleball venues are built every year.

Statistic analysis suggests most of pickleball’s participants are clustered in five states: Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, and Texas. Nonetheless, the sport’s growth continues across the country.

Dedicated pickleball venues are popping up everywhere! Take Ford Lauderdale, Florida, as an example. Soon, the town will see the world’s first pickleball stadium! Skyrocketing participation rates also power tennis court conversions and new growth nationwide.

Need some examples? Consider these news-worthy additions to the world’s pickleball stage:

• In February, Raleigh, North Carolina, announced plans to construct the nation’s largest pickleball center.
• A New Jersey developer plans to open a mid-Atlantic pickleball venue under the banner of the “Robbinsville Pickle House.”
• Pickleball Kingdom, an indoor pickleball franchise, plans to open a massive facility in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

More Participants, More Choices

Similarly, the massive growth in recent years is powering a strong market. Pickleball’s financial value is expected to reach $2.14 billion by 2027, although it’s established a healthy base.

A Washington Post investigation found retail stores tripling floor space for pickleball, downsizing other hobby spaces in the process. Reporter Rick Maese compared the sport’s immense growth to the racquetball craze of the 1970s and 80s. However, while racquetball suffered an unpleasant fall from grace, Maese’s sources predict a brighter future for the more accessible sport of pickleball.

More Professional Pickleball Players and a Bigger Total Prize Pool

Finally, the meteoric rise of pickleball has supercharged an avid community of professional pickleball players. These highly-rated players are raking in money as the number of total participants grows.

CBS News’ Megan Cerullo did a deep dive on the topic, and the findings were surprising! Both hobbyist and fledgling professional pickleball players make good money on the side with their passion. Local tournaments often boast a total prize pool of $100–$500. Upcoming equipment brands frequently sponsor esteemed players for $500–$1,000.

National professionals earn even more. CBS reporters found the highest-earning professional player netted $125,000 in just prize money in the first half of 2023. This hefty payout is further bolstered by appearance fees, sponsorships, and professional engagements.

The PPA alone distributed $5.5 million in total prize money across its 25 events in 2023. Its most prescient rival, Major League Pickleball (MLP), suggested its top earners were bringing in $300,000 annually.
