It should come as no surprise to long-time pickleball players that the sport has a storied history of helping others. Its enthusiastically friendly community is filled with charitable people, many of whom are more than happy to give time to raise funds and awareness.

As the sport’s reach expands, so, too, does its potential as a fundraising opportunity!

Pickle Goddesses wants to recognize those difference-makers and celebrate those playing and raising funds for amazing causes. That’s why we’re dedicating today’s blog post to highlighting some pickleball fundraising success stories!

So, join us! Keep reading and get some warm fuzzies as we take a look at some recent pickleball events with good causes.

Be aware that these events have already happened.

You can certainly contribute more to the cause, but the fun has passed. If you want an opportunity to partake in a similar event, we suggest watching your local news for event announcements. You can also team up with friends to organize your own charity pickleball tournament!

A South Florida Event Funded a $1,000,000 Donation

We’ll start with a big one!

Pickleball players in South Florida did more than share the courts in 2023. They opened their wallets and gave hope to others with a massive $1,000,000 donation pool!

On October 2, 2023, four tennis legends — Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, John McEnroe, and Andy Roddick — played doubles pickleball to claim a $1,000,000 donation for a charitable organization of their choice. Of course, the teams also scored some bragging rights!

A Connecticut Tournament Raised Funds to Fight Childhood Hunger

And the charitable fun doesn’t stop there! In June 2023, Mead Park in New Canaan, Connecticut, hosted a 20-person, two-division tournament to raise funds for Filling in the Blanks, an organization dedicated to eliminating childhood hunger. After registration, players were sorted into teams based on skill level.

The payments made when registering supported Filling in the Blanks, and the tournament was a massive success! If you’re in the area, be sure to keep your eyes on the news. This was the first of a series of planned pickleball fundraisers under the “Courts for a Cause” banner!

(You can also donate to the Norwalk, Connecticut-based charity, Filling in the Blanks, on your own! In addition to supplementing low-income family meals with weekend lunches, Filling in the Blanks also sponsors in-school food pantries and annual “holiday backpacks.”)

Famous Stars Made a Big Impact

What about something more glamorous?

No, we really mean glamorous!

The first of many Light Up the Court tournaments was held on October 23, 2023, in Santa Barbara, California. Attendees were raising funds for The Firework Foundation, which supports art programs in underserved communities. However, that money also scored seats to a star-studded pickleball game!

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry played singles, dazzling onlookers during a fun-packed event.

It may surprise fans of both celebrities, but Perry explained her reasoning in an Instagram post. Like many players, Perry noted that her mother taught her the game. Moreover, she was more than happy to join the fun, highlighting the event as an opportunity to use her “pickle powers for good.”

(And The Firework Foundation’s work doesn’t end at the pickleball courts! You can still donate to the cause. Its flagship service, Camp Firework, is a sleepaway summer camp that introduces children to the joys of artistic expression.)

A New Facility Donated Money to Our Troops

Finally, the most recent event on our list wrapped up a few weeks ago!

On January 21, 2024, The Pickleball Space — a new indoor pickleball complex in Glendale, Arizona — generously donated a chunk of its opening revenue to The C4 Foundation, which supports Navy SEALs and their families.

Kali Broderick, the co-founder of The Pickleball Space, acknowledged her family’s lengthy history of service to the country as her inspiration. She also thanked community members for showing an unprecedented amount of support for the cause!

(And you guessed it right! The C4 Foundation still needs money to serve our service members. You can donate today and support its mission of healing. In addition to supporting Navy SEAL families while their loved ones are deployed, The C4 Foundation also runs a ranch where recently returned SEALs can rest and recuperate.)
