Getting started with a new sport or hobby can be daunting. It doesn’t matter how big or small the challenge may be. For many, learning to craft true-to-life model cars is as frightening as learning to knit!
This fear is one of the driving forces behind Pickle Goddesses. It’s why our writers strive to take the game of pickleball to the next level and encourage its growth. We want to show you that joining that first pickleball game is easy and fun! You’ll even meet new pickleball friends.
However, you must first begin your journey. And — as we just established — that can be frightening!
First, take a breath.
You’ve got this!
Then, read this blog post.
We’re about to show you how you can become a great pickleball player. And, no, you don’t need expensive pickleball coaches or costly pickleball clinics. For the most part, a beginner can learn pickleball with a few friends and plenty of practice. (After all, it wouldn’t be America’s fastest-growing sport if it took decades to master!)
The Three (Common) Ways to Learn Pickleball
Like any sport, pickleball requires practice. You must master its basic skills before learning any advanced strategy. You’ll also need to familiarize yourself with the game’s rules.
Fortunately, thanks to the simplicity of the game, you don’t need advanced lessons to understand its basics. Pickleball’s rules are straightforward enough to learn alone, and there are plenty of online guides to ease your journey.
In fact, you’re on an encyclopedic pickleball database right now. While we can’t teach you any in-person lessons, we can help you understand the rules of the sport. (If you’re looking for some quick lessons, we suggest starting with the basics. After mastering the rules, familiarize yourself with different serving styles and terms!)
Then, decide how you’ll begin your instruction. You can stick to one method, but most players mix and match their learning experience.
Learn Pickleball Online
The internet is packed with information, and plenty of those tips are about pickleball.
We’ve already pointed out how Pickle Goddesses can help, but there are many other resources! USA Pickleball hosts a plethora of in-depth guides and videos. You’ll also find tips and tricks for beginners on social media.
The Pickleball Subreddit is one of the largest online communities, and its friendly denizens are always happy to help beginners.
In-Person Pickleball Lessons
Another route is in-person pickleball classes. These may be solo instruction or group lessons. Either way, you get the hands-on experience of playing pickleball.
We can’t say for certain how much these lessons will cost, though. Many coaches charge hourly. However, your local community may host free group lessons. Keep your eyes peeled for these valuable free lessons, as they’re often staffed by charitable, qualified coaches.
Play Pickleball With Friends
Finally, you can ignore the traditional route and learn pickleball through self-guided interactions.
You’ll need some pickleball-loving friends and a readily available court to improve your skill level this way. However, it’s one of the fastest and most engaging ways to join the fun!
As your skills improve, consider mixing in new drills and shots while playing. Think of each meeting as an informal sports clinic.
If your group is ever unavailable, don’t be afraid to connect with other pickleball players. The community is notoriously friendly, and few will turn down a chance to welcome new players to the sport!
Learn Pickleball and Advance Your Skills
We don’t have enough space to list every pickleball coach and learning center on the planet. We don’t even have enough time to do that for just North America! However, we can offer plenty of amazing pickleball drills and lessons to improve your game.
First, we encourage you to share this post with your pickleball pals to kickstart your lessons. Consider sending them some of our helpful articles, too. We’ve discussed basics — like pre-game stretches and injury prevention. We’ve also covered advanced pickleball strategy and game-changing shots, including stacking and (of course) dinking.
When you’re done sharing, return to the Pickle Goddesses blog and browse the rest of our lessons!
