How good are your pickleball skills?

In pickleball, players are ranked using a numeric system. A whole new player is a 0.0, while anything ranked 5.0 or above is considered one of the sport’s top players!

Needless to say, most players strive to reach that elusive 5.0. It’s the pinnacle of sporting success and an immediately identifiable sign of prestige. However, it’s not easy to reach that level! While the divisions between the intermediate rankings are clear, the leap from 4.5 to 5.0 is at once vast and nuanced.

What Is a 5.0 Pickleball Player?

According to the sport’s rating system, every player is assigned a numeric skill level.

At 5.0 and above, players must demonstrate exceptional skills. Officially, these skills include:

  • Footwork
  • Various shots (including dinks, third-shot drops, and volleys)
  • Shot placement
  • Shot prediction
  • Strategy

Aside from understanding these skills, a 5.0 pickleball player must practice them consistently during rallies. That’s not to say you can never miss a shot; everyone does! However, your focus should be keen enough to avoid and mitigate most rookie errors.

Most 5.0 pickleball players are already within the competitive circuit. Indeed, under the DUPR system, the difference between a 5.0 and a 5.5 player is winning! A 5.0 DUPR score indicates participation in local competitions, but a 5.5 DUPR score (or higher) shows consistent wins at local tournaments.

Summarily, you have your work cut out for you! If you’re set on mastering the sport, you’ll need a mix of guidance and practice. Most of your achievements come through training, yet you can’t train without goals, so…

What to Focus on to Become a 5.0 Pickleball Player

A woman doing sit-ups and training.

What points should you be hitting? What should you drill?

The key to success is holistic.

Focusing too much on a singular area can lead to blind spots in your pickleball game. Mastering advanced strategies — such as stacking — without learning to dink is a losing play. It may earn you a few points in a competition, but it won’t give you the edge required to dominate the court!

To truly elevate your pickleball skills, you need to know everything. Your strategy must align with your athletic skills. Otherwise, you’ll hit a training block.

Fortunately for everyone, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of what players should focus on as they try to break into that 5.0 rank.

1. Patience and Control

In pickleball, most players err because of impatience. You can have the most polished techniques, but a patient opponent is a successful one. Much like the tortoise and the hare, your pickleball game is equal parts athletic power and mental fortitude.

Even the rules of the sport emphasize the importance of biding your time. The most prominent example of such strategic incentives is the two-bounce rule. On its face, this rule removes some of the advantages of serving. However, it also rewards players for focusing on long-term strategy.

2. Exemplary Teamwork

Patience goes hand-in-hand with teamwork. (And, obviously, singles players can ignore this portion of the assessment.) You’ll make more progress with a consistent, reliable partner. Yet, by the same token, you must be willing to work with others.

This implicitly social side of the sport is one of the driving forces behind its community’s insatiable need to share with friends. It’s driven pickleball’s explosive growth and given pickleball players more time and space to practice their craft. The emphasis on social progress also incentivizes a better understanding of the sport’s rules.

3. Fantastic Footwork

And what of the sport’s physical achievements?

Above all else, players should focus on footwork. Good footwork is crucial to developing your skills and avoiding injury. With time, muscle memory begins driving your movements; speed and confidence will become second nature.

Never grow complacent!

Those drills may seem trivial as your skills grow, but slacking leads to mistakes! Always include a few footwork exercises in your daily practice lineup. They’ll help you boost your speed and familiarity with the court.

4. Resetting Shots

At the 5.0 level, you’ll have a long-completed mastery of basic skills, including dinks and volleys. However, to raise that skill level, you’ll want to focus on resetting shots.

Defensive play is one thing. Your strategy is everything, but that intellectual effort must be backed by athletic skill. You’ve learned to dink and place shots in hard-to-reach parts of the court. Now, it’s time to learn to block a volley!

Always pay close attention to how you hit the ball.

Blocked volleys are meant to reset the game by forcing an otherwise hard shot into a more defensible area — typically the non-volley zone. Thus, you shouldn’t be contacting the ball with force. Instead, absorb its energy. Let it lose its energy and send it on a nice little visit to the opponents’ NVZ.

5. Hard and Soft Games

Finally, master hard and soft play.

In pickleball, a “hard” game is an offensive, fast-paced matchup. It’s often used against lower-ranked players to force them away from the net and into the less defendable portions of the court. “Hard” games revolve around spikes, strikes, and scrambling to find purchase.

Naturally, a “soft” game is the opposite. “Soft” play is encouraged when facing beginners. It’s a slower, defensive style of play that sticks close to the net.

5.0 pickleball players understand the difference between these tactics and know when to implement the appropriate plays.

Remember what we said about patience? This is where you’ll use it!

A competitive pickleball game should combine hard and soft shots. You want to force an error and confuse your opponent. To do so, you must develop a sense of timing. Know when hard shots lead to openings on the court and use that to your advantage. Likewise, observe how a simple, sudden switch from soft to hard play can give you the perfect opportunity to strike.
