It’s a common question, and we’re sure you’ve heard it before. You may have even asked the question yourself! Just how long is a pickleball game?

Like most things, the answer depends on the skill levels and rules. Unevenly matched games of pickleball will be short, while a face-off between two fantastic players can last a long while! Moreover, if players are trying to make a game last, it’s (fairly) easy to do so. As of February 2024, the longest pickleball game — certified by Guinness World Record judges — ran for 24 uninterrupted hours!

Now, most games won’t take up the entire day. The vast majority won’t come anywhere close to seven or eight hours. Aside from being rude to fellow players, lengthy pickleball games are tiring endurance exercises.

So, with that said, just how long is your average pickleball game?

Understanding the Standard Game

Pickleball matches are generally played in sets of two or three games. There are three standards: 11, 15, and 21 points. Notably, most games cap off at 11 or 15 points; 21-point matches are rare. The first team to reach the designated score (or, in the event of a tie, lead by at least two points) wins the game; the first team to win two of three games wins it all.

By extension, this means that some pickleball matches don’t have a third game! If one team wins two consecutive games, they’re considered the match champion. Proper pickleball etiquette would, therefore, suggest that both teams vacate the court and allow another group to play.

It sounds like a short system, but pickleball is complicated by its side-out scoring system. Unlike many other recreational games, only the serving team scores points. Faults committed by the serving team do not add to the receiving team’s score. This is a universal rule applicable to both singles and doubles games.

Each pickleball game lasts around 15–30 minutes. This number assumes that you’re enjoying a casual, evenly-matched pickleball game. By extension, knowing that each match is two or three games, most pickleball matches run 30–75 minutes.

Are There Time-Outs in Pickleball?

Generally speaking, there aren’t many reasons to introduce a lengthy pause to any pickleball game. It’s not a contact sport, so you (hopefully) won’t see any serious injuries. Similarly, you don’t have huge teams needing five-minute-long strategic briefings, either. (In singles games, you don’t even have a teammate!)

Even so, there are official provisions for time-outs in pickleball.

Each team gets two time-outs per game. (Three time-outs are allowed for 15-point games.) Each standard time-out must last no more than one minute, although play can resume earlier if desired. Time-outs must be called before a serving attempt. (These rules are outlined in section ten of the USA Pickleball Association rulebook!)

There are also medical time-outs. In tournament play, a medical time-out lasts no more than fifteen minutes. As of 2024, these time-outs no longer count against a team’s limit. Should the player be unable to return to the court after fifteen minutes, the game is suspended and considered a “retirement.”

While the same rules can apply to casual games, most recreational pickleball players operate on a “do-what’s-reasonable” basis. This means the length of a pickleball game at your local park may be longer or shorter than expected.

What Influences the Length of a Pickleball Game?

Of course, as a lauded sport for all ages and skill levels, a pickleball game lasts however long it lasts! You can’t control other players, but you can learn to spot the signs of a soon-to-be-empty pickleball court.

Obviously, one of the easiest ways to know how soon that pickleball end is coming is to ask how the teams are playing. Officially, matches are played in a “best of three games” format; however, many casual play teams enjoy one-game matches. (And don’t confuse a “single game” with a “singles game!”) Eliminating the other two rounds will dramatically lower the average length of a pickleball game, making the associated court a hot commodity.

Different Skill Levels

One of the telltale signs of a soon-to-be-vacated court is an unevenly matched pickleball game. As a highly social game, pickleball is typically played as “mixed doubles.” This means that the skill levels of each team are irrelevant. In casual play, you can have a fresh-to-the-scene team going toe-to-toe with a highly skilled para pickleball duo! It’s part of the beauty of the game, and it means many games end quickly.

Of course, this does not apply to tournaments.

In a formal competitive setting, judges carefully consider the qualifications of all players admitted into the roster. In singles pickleball tournaments, individuals are matched according to one-on-one comparisons of their skill levels. For doubles pickleball, the combined experience of both players is carefully considered.

Not that you’re really worried about the length of a pickleball game during a tournament! During these highly competitive matchups, most players are more concerned about the mental side of pickleball.

The Rule of the Pickleball Game

Consider, too, the rules of the game.

Doubles format games often run longer than singles matches. It makes sense, too! In a singles game, only one person can return the ball. However, there are two defenders when playing doubles pickleball!

The average pickleball match also lengthens as players more closely adhere to the rulebook. Two teams following a roughed-in version of the scoring system will likely overlook many faults, making for a much shorter game.

Conversely, highly competitive and technical pickleball players are more likely to acknowledge and call faults. These line calls may add only a few seconds to the final pickleball game length, but they’re still worth consideration if you’re really itching to play!

The Location of the Pickleball Court

Finally, there’s one fact many players overlook when scoping out a court.

Indoor pickleball games are often shorter than their outdoor equivalents. Unlike standard outdoor courts, indoor pickleball games enjoy the luxury of a fully climate-controlled environment. There are no sudden gusts of wind to carry the ball across the court. Likewise, you won’t see any unexpected breezes hurling the ball into the non-volley zone!
