4 Places to Find Public and Private Lessons

There are two ways to polish your pickleball skills.

Public lessons are often offered for free or for a small fee. Most are group sessions. Everyone is expected to meet the minimum skill level, and depending on the size of the lessons, you may not get one-on-one time with the instructor. Many local parks and recreation services are encouraging outdoor activity with free group lessons, and you may even find some at your local pickleball club!

Private lessons are more expensive. These one-on-one lessons are for every skill level, and you’ll have plenty of alone time to polish your most troublesome skills. Even players at the highest level of America’s fastest-growing sport attend personal one-on-one lessons.

1. Local Activity Centers

Anywhere with pickleball courts is a prime spot to scope out lessons.

Even if it’s not affiliated with a formal organization, courts attract fellow pickleball players. Savvy trainers frequent these locations to sniff out any beginner players seeking their services. You may even be approached by an opportunistic trainer, opening a great opportunity for comradery and skill building.

Otherwise, a formal court will have an affiliated organization. For example, your local park is supported by the parks and recreation service, which may host semi-regular public pickleball lessons. Private courts likely have staff dedicated to training new and experienced players.

(Just be sure to set your goals. A certified pickleball instructor costs more than a hobbyist, but you’ll get a more cohesive experience. Still, even casual instructors can lay a solid foundation.)

2. Pickleball Clubs

If you want a cohesive pickleball experience, seek out a formally organized club.

Hundreds of cities across the United States have a dedicated pickleball club. There, you’ll find new friends and regular games to keep your pickleball skills sharp.

Some clubs also have clinics. These group lessons focus on drills to train specific skills. Control, footwork, and power are common pain points and frequent clinic topics.

If you can’t find a citywide club, consider visiting your local college. These institutions teach more than academics; they also host eager young pickleball players! All those interested participants are driving a massive boom in collegiate pickleball organizations, many of which are happy to welcome locals.

(Don’t be discouraged if private clubs aren’t open to outsiders. You may be required to pay dues beforehand. If you can’t afford to don’t want to pay those fees, just wait! Most have infrequent open play days to attract newcomers and gain members.)

3. Other Racquetsports Clubs

You may even find a willing instructor at your local tennis club!

Check all your local racquet sports courts. Even if their mainline activity is squash, they probably have some pickleball players, too. Play some games and get some court time. You’ll learn something new and find people to point you in the right direction.

Interestingly enough, many tennis clubs are opening their doors to pickleballers. In addition to hosting pickleball days, these clubs may also employ pickleball coaches and certified pickleball instructors.

4. Online

Finally, you can find online pickleball lessons.

YouTube may be your most valuable resource. Dedicated coaches are always updating their pages and adding virtual classes.
